The Garden

(1962)
A novel by

The death of a young girl in her first months at a lush New England college leads to love between two of her classmates, Kath and The Blossom.

Kath, the more intellectual of the two, and The Blossom, a physically vital girl from the pages of the social register, maneuver to be together to understand the world around them, despite parental disapproval. Both are virgins and boy crazy, yet so new in the world of ideas and emotions that they need each other to verify reality.

Together, the girls are invincible. Kath will help The Blossom write her papers, and in return The Blossom will punch out anyone who is mean to Kath. But their roles twine and intertwine as they imitate Elvis the Pelvis, try to seduce the French teacher, lose their virginities, or get marijuana from the pizza boy in the America of the mid to late 50's (the Eisenhower years), before they taste the apple of knowledge and must leave the Garden.

Questions of love, friendship, and sexuality are brought to life in this intimate coming-of-age story, often compared to John Knowles' A Separate Peace. International bestselling author Kathrin Perutz, who appeared on the Mike Wallace Show with Barbra Streisand at the time of The Garden's publication, offers a sexually-charged view into the struggles of becoming a woman.
