Patrick Pennington is a boy, who is talented in playing piano, but he has troubles with his friends, parents and teachers and often he gets out of control. The story takes place in Fiddler's End a little town in Great Britain. The main character in the book is Penn. His real name is Patrick Pennington, but everybody calls him Penn. Penn had broken into a sweet shop with Smeeton (his enemy) and had stolen four Easter eggs and ten cigarettes. Penn had been put on probation, no one had known about Smeeton. So this burglary had branded Penn in the city. His best friend is Bates, a nice person, who is peaceful and talented in singing. Penn's father is very strict and sometimes he hits him. His mother wants her son to be educated.
