Gislane was a mustee, a beautiful young girl in whose veins ran a sixteenth part of African blood.
Living in England, she was free; under the laws of the West Indies, she was still a slave, subject to a life of degradation at the hands of the Caribbean planters.
Intent on destroying the love affair between Gislane and his young cousin Matt, Robert Hilton, master of the vast plantations in Jamaica and Antigua, had her cruelly abducted and sent back to the horrors that awaited her in the Caribbean.
Matt followed, back to the sugar plantations he hated with all his being; back to the heartless savagery of the white, wealthy owners and the suffering of their black slaves.
But now rebellion was in the air-slaves were listening to the voodoo drums that called in the night.
And as Matt journeyed throughout the islands searching for Gislane, he vowed he would fight to the last to abolish the abomination of slavery.
Matt Hilton's search for his kidnapped love Gislane took him back to the West Indies - back to the great sugar plantations of the Caribbean which he had left as a boy. Heir to the Hilton estates, he deplored the brutality of his fellow planters - men who had built up immense wealth and political influence and who wielded total power over their West African slaves.
But now the seeds of rebellion were growing - the slaves were beginning to listen to the message of the voodoo drums and the words of the mamaloi foretelling the coming of a saviour
