Bill Naughton (1910-1992) is best known for his novel Alfie, but he also wrote a number of plays and three volumes of autobiography. This is a writer's journal of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. In it Naughton describes his friendships with many fine writers-including Frank O'Connor, Patrick Kavanagh, Louis MacNeice, and W.R. Rodgers-painters, and others. Limpid, candid, and tellingly written, this journal delineates the struggles and triumphs of a migrant Irish writer living in the English provinces, with sympathetic insights into the variety and comedy of human behavior.
