One hundred years ago, a tragic event took place in the forests of Otter Brook. Houses were burned, people were killed, and an unspeakable curse was loosed on the small town. That curse still exists, defining and haunting numerous families. The fathers of these affected families must disregard their hearts and heritage, forced to commit dark and brutal acts.

Jo Murphy learns this history in horrific fashion when she wakes up one morning to find her ten year-old son, Casey, gone. It doesn't take long for Jo and the local police to determine that Casey has been kidnapped by Jo's ex-husband, Richard. But there is more than just an estranged father and a toxic father/son relationship at play.

Local sheriff Andy Nelson knows about Dansky's family history...particularly a fascination with a place out in the woods of Otter Brook known as The Hollows. Just about everyone in town pretends it is all folklore and spooky stories to tell around campfires, but those with family roots deep in the town know the grisly truth. And as more and more clues are uncovered, Jo and Sheriff Nelson become terribly certain that Dansky is delivering his son into unspeakable hands deep in the woods.
