Sophie is a happy 18-year-old living in London with her Irish mother, Anna. Anna has devoted her life to her daughter. It may be just the two of them - no dad or grandparents or uncles or aunts - but Anna has more than enough love and has worked hard enough, to give Sophie everything she could ever need or want.

Laura is a not-so-happy 36-year-old artist. She too has a daughter, Mandy, but she is haunted by the loss of her first child, Jody. Happy-go-lucky as she is, Mandy lives in the shadow of that loss and the fact that her mother, uncle and grandmother have never recovered from it.
