The author deftly tells a story of the yearning and unfulfilled dreams of people in a working-class neighborhood. Her characters, struggling in a world that is dull and gray, nonetheless have moments of brilliance, when caring, humor, and even joy brighten their lives. The story takes place in December, following the course of 25 days as depicted dime-store advent calendars, and though it doesn't end with a Hollywood-style Christmas, its redemption and absolution suit the season.
