The young priest Jan has ventured far from home, deep into the endless galaxy beyond Pillar.
Together, he and the shipwright Mell visit far-off worlds. Mell looks for her sister, while Jan looks for food and medicine for his people back home.
Their shared search takes them closer to Enemy space, to a storm-blasted desert world were a dilapidated ship and its misfit crew will carry them closer to their goals -- if it doesn't kill them first.
All the while, they are watched by agents of both the Faith and the Enemy: two sides locked in a search of their own, seeking an ancient Temple that holds the secrets of Creation.
