"Mrs. Molesworth's spirits are pale passive wraiths, more akin to the blandly enigmatic true narratives of the Physical Research Society than the rigorously personal symbolism of a Dickens or a Le Fanu. Her greatest strengths in the genre were a pellucid style, a moderate (at times anemic) tone, and the occasional inspired image, as in 'The Story of the Rippling Train,' a wisp of smoke recognized as the pearl-gray dress of the deceased." - Robert Knowlton.
