A bad space jump flings Longknife and Rodrigo's starship light-years away from home, and they find a planet inhabited by the descendants of a ship's crew lost 300 years earlier. As acting ambassador, Longknife is eager to welcome the planet's inhabitants back into the fold of humanity. But Rodrigo is suspicious, and she senses something amiss under the planet's veneer of peace and prosperity.
