Weird things are happening in the tiny coastal village of Hibernia, California.

First, a recently arrived lawless family begins to disrupt the normally placid town. Then a stranger moves in seeking to locate a long-abandoned mine which is believed to contain a treasure far greater than once believed, leading to violence and destruction. Worst of all, though, are the sightings of a mysterious, gruesome ambulance staffed by ghastly, bird-like people, which appears whenever someone is dying and transports them away, never to be seen again. Caught up in the turmoil of strangeness is a disparate group of people that includes the village sheriff, a restaurant owner with a personal secret, and a writer working on behalf of a shadowy international consortium desperate to obtain the contents of the mine. Before long they learn that the ambulance is not simply a ghastly hoax being perpetrated on the village, but the return of a supernatural evil that descended upon the town once before, in the late 19th century; an evil that must be stopped...somehow.
