The clock is ticking

It starts when Rockie Wexler arrives at her father's laboratory in the Mojave Desert and finds it a smoking ruin.

She also finds Dr. Leslie Sheridan, a hard-edged geologist and self-described pain in the butt, but there's no sign of Addison Wexler or the TAQ box, a device that can predict earthquakes.

Unfortunately, it can also cause them.

In the rubble of the lab, Rockie and Sheridan are captured by Conan, a mercenary in the employ of the mysterious Mr. Smith, Addison Wexler's benefactor. Conan wants two things: the thumb drives containing Wexler's research -- and Rockie.

When a helicopter suddenly appears, Conan escapes. The chopper pilot is Nevin Maxwell, head of the very private security company Sheridan works for when he isn't teaching geology. In Springfield, Missouri, where Maxwell decides Rockie will be safe until her father and the TAQ box are found.

Rockie would rather go with Conan.

A series of earthquakes over the next several days leave weird signatures on seismographs that point to the TAQ box. Their proximity to oil fields suggests that Wexler's captors are attempting to trigger a major "gusher" -- the question is why? And where?

Rockie is worried about her father and miserable. It's cold, it's snowing, and Sheridan is beginning to grow on her. When he isn't being a pain in the butt, he's funny and endearingly geeky.

Sheridan has good reason to despise Addison Wexler, yet he finds himself falling for Rockie. She's whip smart, gutsy and sexy, even in the combat boots he's sure she wears just to annoy him.

The afternoon Sheridan is forced to leave Rockie with an underling, Conan swoops in and kidnaps her. No corner of the world is safe from him. Or Sheridan fears, the TAQ box.

With the clock sweeping toward midnight, it's a game of where on earth is Rockie? Find her, and they'll find the TAQ box.

And, Sheridan hopes, the love of his life.
