Nestor Burma is a French crime detector with lots of savoir-faire. Chief of the Fiat Lux detective agency, he operates in the Paris of the 1940s and 50s, assisted by his secretary. A phone call from an ex-prisoner of war takes Burma, disguised as a tramp, to a meeting in the 14th arrondissement.
