When Earl Derr Biggers, the creator of the successful Post Series, Charlie Chan, died, the magazine's editors looked around for a writer who could create a similar oriental sleuth. The magazine offered a number of writers the chance to go to China to soak up atmosphere and learn about the mysterious East first hand. J. P. Marquand took the trip. The result was the Mr. Moto series.
