Johnny Bookman, not wanting to leave the security and familiarity of his London home, is evacuated to the country in September 1939. At first Winchurch in Somerset seemed like a foreign land to him and he planned his escape. Anita Evesham, used to living away from her parents, treated the move as a bit of an adventure. Coming from totally different backgrounds, evacuees Anita and Johnny, an unlikely pair, are thrown together during the Second World War. Anita, whom Johnny insists on calling Annie, is drawn to the young boy from the first day. Their experiences are destined to change both of their lives and the lives of their families in this heart-warming story.
