Smear Job

(1975)
(The fourth book in the Callan series)
A novel by

Callan is out of the Section - engaged in an almost legitimate business venture with his pungent friend Lonely - but Hunter wants him back for one more job - a smear job. If Callan accepts, he (and Lonely) will be paid handsomely. More importantly, they avoid having a Red File opened on them - a red file which means 'marked for death'.
In the fourth novel to feature the iconic secret agent he created for television, James Mitchell places his hero at the centre of a fast-paced plot which sees the Section operating ruthlessly in Sicily, Germany and America until Callan is left alone to defend himself on a deserted stretch of the English coast. When published in the USA, the New York Times warned that this novel came with "A high chill factor".
