Elizabeth Exley, five-year-old daughter of a University of Illinois at Chicago English professor, is kidnapped from the playground of the elementary school where she attends kindergarten. That Elizabeth's kidnapping is a mistake is apparent from the beginning. Fortunately the Rawls, whose daughter Genevieve is the intended victim, are understanding and cooperative in meeting the abductor's demands and serving as intermediaries in arranging for the child's release. The setting is Hubbard Woods, Illinois in the 1980s
