Steven and Komoru have arrived back on Earth. The year’s suspension for Saving Pan was more of a gift from the Federation Council than a punishment. After their disastrous encounter with the pirates, Colonel Howe and Beaver devise a plan to increase the efficiency of the fighting contingent of the ships by sending Steven to Marine Boot camp. They manage to persuade Komoru that it will help keep Steven safe, and from that moment on he is given little choice but to go.
Dispirited, Steven finds himself on a gruelling thirteen-week course of basic marine training, with young men half his age. As her pregnancy develops, Komoru becomes a lot less assured and becomes fearful. However, she manages to get a little closure on some of the men in the Japanese intelligence community. Back in Modloch space, the emperor turns on Charlie. In an act of childish spitefulness, Charlie gives Jean the key to beating Darrick in one of their many duels in the Thunderfighters, which in turn seals his fate.
