Those quintessential cosmopolites, Reuben and Cynthia Frost, invite fans to new adventures in Murphy's successor to Murder for Lunch , etc. Well-matched as elderly and wise, the retired lawyer and his wife take up the challenge of investigating a case in which they are personally interested, the murder of Reuben's godson, David Rowan. A young but distinguished author, David was at work on a biography which, according to the Frosts' friends in Manhattan, could damage certain lofty reputations. When the author's researcher dies, apparently from AIDS, Reuben turns up evidence of a second murder. Finding the answer to who did the killing, and why, requires all the old lawyer's experiences of ambition gone wrong. The author's pungent wit graces the skillful plot.
