After suffering through a harsh winter at Valley Forge, Washington's troops are strengthened in their resolve to bring a new nation to birth.

She could not keep her secret hidden for long.

With her brothers risking their lives for the cause of liberty, Rachel Bradford despises the tyranny of England. One day she finds a badly wounded enemy soldier hiding in their barn. Jacob Steiner is a German Jew who had been forcibly consripted to serve among the Hessian soldiers. Her first impulse is to turn him over to the authorities, but pity causes her to take him in and nurse him back to health. Concealing him from her family, she begins to care for him and discovers that he is nothing like the enemy she expected.

All through the long winter as her brothers are nearly starving at Valley Forge, Rachel is torn between her loyalty to the American cause of freedom and her awakening feelings for Steiner, especially after he comes to faith through her witness. But the day will come when she must face her family with the fact that she loves a man who was serving in the army of the enemy.
