The first novel by the editor of the Times Literary Supplement and the author of Umbrella, Of Love and Asthma (winner of the 1992 Hawthornden Prize and part of the Chronicle of Modern Twilight series), and the Liquidator. Described as ". a witty and delightful novel about well-dressed, well-spoken, well-connected people? People like yourself: almost always decent, usually honest, frequently-hardworking, sometimes very lecherous and often downright caddish." A bemused glance at the gentle static produced when elements of a rather stodgy, wealthy London suburb rub up against the new moraes of the 1960s (professional ambition and sexual liberalism). Perhaps not the stunning prose and penetrating characterization of his more recent work, nonetheless this novel does display Mount's acute powers of observation and incisive humour.
