David Willis McCullough was born in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania, grew up in the Albany, New York, area and graduated from the University of Rochester in 1959. After graduate school at Stanford University and a brief stint on the Oakland (CA) Tribune, he returned to New York and spent the rest of his professional career in the publishing business
