The Canisbay Conspiracy

(1966)
A novel by

Sometimes, we have to make up our own rules...

It's Christmas Eve on the Scottish island of Canisbay and the residents of Castle Donal are busying themselves with festive preparations.

With the last sprig of holly fixed to the wall and the table set for six, Miss Margaret MacDonal finally raises her glass to make a toast to her four guests.

When suddenly, out in the hall, they hear a loud and desperate knock on the front door...

Due for extradition to stand trial in his native Zanza, Chief Sedibo has escaped from prison and travelled north to the Western Isles, hoping to find a friend in the former Governor General.

Closely pursued by the police, he instead arrives at the house of Miss MacDonal, the impoverished but redoubtable Queen of Canisbay.

Bred in the ancient tradition that at Christmas a stranger must receive unstinted hospitality - and knowing that she will be loyally supported by her island allies - Miss MacDonal decides to organise his escape from the country.

From the castle to the church, the post office to the school, the villagers gather together to aid Miss MacDonal in her battle of wits against the authorities, the police and the Home Secretary himself.

But with the offer of an extortionate reward sent out for the Chief's capture and the village on lockdown, just how faithful will the queen's loyal followers prove to be?

The Canisbay Conspiracy is an original and intensely exciting thriller will keep you guessing till the end.
