The Thirteen Bracelets

(1974)
A novel by

In 2044, there's not much left of the United States that existed just decades earlier. New York and Washington are in shambles, warlords and petty criminals control much of New Jersey and Connecticut, the West is known as The Wasteland, and the South is divided into White Dixie and Black Dixie. On a diplomatic visit, the Mudir of Chad loses 13 gold slave bracelets, slavegirls attached, in what seems an impossible theft. Shape-shifting Agent Hari Denver is tasked to recover them, a job that takes him through a yachts-versus-ferry-boats navel battle in Long Island Sound, a tense escape chopper flight with a fiddle-playing rabbi, a menacing flock of 200 hawks, and exploding elevators, trains and ping-pong balls - all beneath the Pentagon - and also a probably insane President. Other than these pleasantries, Denver has to evade the Mudir and his posse, who insist on being part of the hunt.
