The two partners Chet Duncan and Ezra Blain were on their way to Devil's Fork in Colorado, lured by gold and liquor, when they witnessed the murder of Frank Bennett. The dying man entrusted the care of his daughter to Chet, which led to him being framed for murder, jailed, beaten up and nearly killed.
