Martha's Journey

(2010)
A novel by

Maureen Lee

Liverpool 1914. Martha Rossi lives in a Liverpool tenement with her five children and husband, Joe. Despite working all the hours she can, they don't have much to get by on. When Martha's son Joe, who is 14, enlists to fight for his country, for a shilling, Martha is horrified. She can't believe the government is turning a blind eye to the scores of young boys who are joining the army. Within weeks, Joe is despatched to France, where scores of young men are meeting an early death. Grief-stricken, Martha is determined that someone will bring the loss of these young boys into the spotlight. Followed by journalists, flanked by her friends, Martha begins a journey that will see her walk from Liverpool to London, right to the doorway of No. 10 Downing Street, to get a public acknowledgement for all the boys who have died in this way. It's not just Martha's journey, but a journey for every mother who has lost a son in The Great War.
