J. Lyon Layden was born in Savannah, Ga. and grew up on the banks of the Ogeechee in Richmond Hill, Ga.

He is an accomplished journalist and musician, having written articles for international magazines and played some of the largest jazz and blues festivals in the world. His debut illustrated chapter book, "The Other Side of Yore," was published in 2007.
