Lucy Holland left London to take up a post on the West Indian island of St. Aubyn, as governess to the children of the Acting Governor. On her arrival at the harbour she was met by a black man whom she took to be the Etons' servant, and she boarded his landau. When they stopped at an imposing residence, she was helped down by a tall man in his thirties, who regarded her with a mixture of disapproval and puzzlement. 'You are younger than I expected.' he said, 'and your hair is yellow.'
This, Lucy mused, was an unexpected way for a man to greet his children's prospective governess. But further exchanges convinced her that they were speaking at cross purposes. This was not Mr Eton at all, and the position he was offering her was very different from the one she had come for. She was still wondering what to do, when Sebastian Caradon coolly suggested she should abandon her aspirations to work for the Etons and marry him instead.
