It's a drizzly November in England's picturesque Hop Valley, and Alison Hope feels restless. So when her old friend, Philip Hunter, begs her to come to London to help track down the source of some computer fraud, she's delighted - much to the dismay of Inspector Nick Trevellyan, her friend and lover, who senses trouble, even danger, ahead. His instincts are right. Alison has hardly had time to assume a new name, dye her hair, and acquire tinted contact lenses, when the fiscal fraud turns into murder. Nick, meanwhile, is stuck at home, trying to track down the brutal rapist of a young girl before the man can strike again. When Nick's longtime associate, Bill Deacon, has to go into the hospital, and the overly ambitious and efficient Detective Sergeant Walpole arrives to replace him, Nick has yet another reason to be desperate to finish his case. In London, Alison is on her own in a terrifying situation unlike any she's ever faced before.
