In the late spring of 1848 a mounted man, herding before him two pack-animals, paused at timberline in the mouth of a pass through the formidable range which forms the principal barrier between California and Nevada and which since has been named, for no particular reason-for such is the paucity of men's imaginations-the White Mountains.
