Originally published in 1927! This one's as much a romance as it is a western. First there is Don Jaime Higuenes, lord of the Rancho Valle Verde, who runs his domain under 16th century rules. A chance look at an Eastern magazine makes him enamoured of Roberta Antrim, New York socialite, whose black-sheep uncle has made her heiress to a large wealth of real sheep. The problem is that the ovines are illegally grazing on Don Jaime's land. Then there's the foxy con man *Crooked Bill*, Roberta's uncle, constantly scheming to avoid honest work. It would work out real well for him if his niece married Glenn Hackett, long, lanky, brainy young eastern lawyer. The perfect match for Roberta, but how can he compete with the lure of strange places and faces?
