Chapter One

Everyone knows that one day they will leave this physical plane of existence, but only an unlucky few ever actually stare into the eyes of death and know that they will probably never see another sunrise.
Was I already dead? If I wasn't then why was my whole life flashing before my eyes? The years - days - hours - and in fact, every millisecond of my life replayed in my head as if I were watching some kind of classic film.
The images moved through my brain so fast that it would seem impossible to absorb, but contrary to this, I experienced every feeling - every moment of my life as if I were reliving it all over again. Though I have been in some dangerous situations before, I had never really contemplated death. Most people don't think about how they will die or when, at least not until they realize that the end is imminent.
But what had brought me to this moment? I couldn't be sure where or when I had made that final mistake that would ultimately lead me to my end. Was it the day I made the decision to go to college, or possibly when I took that internship so far away from home?
As much as I wanted to blame it on these decisions, deep down I knew the truth. I could mark the beginning of the end the moment I stared into his eyes - the eyes of a beast so wild and untamed that I had been foolish to ever believe I could change what he was.
But what if I was wrong? Where did it all truly begin?
* * *
I had just stepped off of the curb and into the crosswalk when I heard the roar of motorcycles coming toward me. Looking up, I saw a group of four bikers headed in my direction. There was no time to think. I instinctively stepped back onto the sidewalk so they could pass.
Instead of running the red traffic light, like I thought they might, they stopped. It was too late to start crossing the street now; the light would turn before I made it to the other side.
There were four of them, but I only noticed one - the one that had lifted his dark sunglasses to look at me.
It was his eyes. They were fascinating, but also a little disturbing. Unlike the dark brown eyes so many of the people on the reservation had, this guy's eyes were silver gray - like pools of moonlight.
Those eyes seemed to bore into my soul, stripping the outer shell of my body until he was staring right into the very essence of my being. In that instant, I truly believed that there was nothing that he didn't know about me. Those mysterious - beautiful eyes soothed the turmoil in my soul, while at the same time they explored my darkest secrets.
I had seen those eyes before.
