by

Leo KesslerBattle for Hitler's Eagles Nest (2000)
A novel by Leo Kessler

1945: In Berlin, the rats are fleeing the sinking ship. The Fuhrer is dead and his followers are fleeing for their lives. All save one: Standartenfuhrer Hackmann, Martin Bormann's principal SS aide. Hackmann knows that the last Melmer gold shipment has been sent by Hitler's Secretary Bormann to the Fuhrer's mountain refuge, the 'Eagle's Nest' in the Bavarian Alps. Bormann wants to use the looted gold for his own purposes. Hackmann, the fanatical Nazi, has other ideas: the gold will be smuggled out of the dying Reich to South America, where it will be used to finance the Fourth Reich. Mallory's Marauders, in Berlin to assassinate Hitler, learn of Hackmann's mission and set off southward in pursuit. Before them is a long dangerous journey through 'outlaw country', made doubly dangerous by Hitler's 'Werewolves', the underground Nazi Youth terrorist organisation at Hackmann's command. The chase is made more complicated by the fact that General 'Iron Mike' O'Daniels' US Thunderbolt division is also fighting its way to the Eagle's Nest, as well as General Leclerc's 2nd French Armoured Division.
