Before Pearl Harbor, Captain America embodied the American spirit by punching Adolph Hitler in the face. It was a time when black and white and good and evil were easily apparant. Against mad scientists and nazis Captain America leaps into action to defend democracy. These stories demonstrate all the qualities that made the Golden Age of comic books memorable, including the debut appearances of Captain America and his arch-enemy the Red Skull. Early artwork by Jack Kirby displays traces of the style that was to revolutionize comics in the '60's.
