An orphaned, dumb, half-Indian girl with no identity, but bearing the Talisman of the Anasazi, the lost tribe of Atlos is rescued from a house fire in Sacramento which claims the life of her mother. Pursued by "Them", a bend of dedicated Indian medicine men, tortured, tormented and heartbroken over the loss of her mother, she resolves to make her way back to the place where she was born - the place of the Red Rocks.

So the Child runs away from her the German family who has adopted her and catches a train to San Francisco. On board she finds a protector in a gambler by the name of Mike O'Hara who cares for her as she grows up into a beautiful, exotic woman and earns her keep by dancing in the local bar. Given the name of Orphan Annie by the other saloon girls, they soon become jealous of her dancing, beauty and her ability to attract men's attention.

Then she finds love with a Scottish captain, the only person who has been able to communicate with her, who impulsively marries her and takes her home to Scotland. Although she is far away from "Them", she still feels the call of her people and her birthright.
