Library Journal
This amiable, readable biography of the writer best known for The Good Soldier and the ''Parade's End'' tetralogy succeeds in the author's declared intent of giving an ''impression of how Ford's life was lived.'' Moreover, British novelist Judd ( Short of Glory , Penguin, 1986) offers valuable insights into the oeuvre, especially the too-neglected poetry. But the audience for this book is problematic: the general reader cares almost nothing about Ford, and the lack of scholarly paraphernalia, which Judd intentionally excluded, will limit the text's appeal for academics. Recommended primarily for larger academic libraries, or places where literary curiosity is intense.-- Robert E. Brown, Onondaga Cty. P.L., Syracuse, N.Y.

Distinguished novelist Judd (his A Breed of heroes won the Royal Society of Literature award) presents a beautifully written, sympathetic account of the life, times, and work of the legendary but neglected English writer (1873-1939). Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
