Far Away and Long Ago

(1917)
A novel by

William Henry Hudson was born more than 100 years ago in Argentina of an English father and an American mother. Rather than forcing their son into a conventional mold, Hudson's parents encouraged his love of nature. FAR AWAY AND LONG AGO recalls this idyllic childhood.

The Argentina of Hudson's boyhood was a poor and undeveloped wide open land where nature ruled. From a young age, he recorded his impressions of the countryside, particularly of the remarkable birds, swans, ostrichs, flamingoes and other species now sadly depleted.

"Hudson's work is a vision of natural beauty and of human life as it might be, quickened and sweetened by the sun, and the wind and the rain, and by fellowship with all other forms of life...a very great writer..the most valuable our age has possessed." --John Galsworthy
