This is a collection of stories both in the contemporary and traditional style. They are not necessarily horror stories but rather the type of tale that makes you shiver. The literature is chosen for its accessibilty to young readers and includes many of today's major authors. The book aims to provide varied and stimulating material reflecting male and female interests and an awareness of our multicultural world. The books are suitable for class use and for GCSE examination and coursework providing material for wider reading programmes and the opportunity for more detailed study of the works. It encourages pupils to consider alternative ways of looking at a play or story and to express their personal views using supporting evidence from the text. A section including suggestions for writing gives pupils a chance to respond in a variety of ways to what they have read, through imaginative writing, dramatic reconstructions, "genre transformations", as well as through traditional critical essay.
