First published at age 12--light verse in his school newspaper--Hayes has been scribbling compulsively ever since. Hayes is a member of the Authors Guild and a charter member of International Thriller Writers ... despite having been cashiered from the Cub Scouts at age 9 for punching out the Den Mother's son. (His fellow Cubs felt he deserved a Merit Badge for this well-executed project.)

When he was an advertising man, Hayes lived briefly in Chicago (IL) and San Diego (CA), but spent most of his life in his city of birth, Los Angeles (CA), where he was an uphill neighbor of Robert Bloch in Laurel Canyon. (Hayes regards Bloch as the most under-appreciated American writer of the 20th century. According to Hayes, Bloch's wry wit, his insight into the heart and soul of the common man--as well as his perfect ear for American vernacular--his prowess at storytelling, and his always-graceful prose should have encouraged literary critics to place Bloch above the pigeonhole of being an author of merely genre works.)

Roy Hayes is now catching up on his reading in Las Vegas, where he lives with his memories and his intermittently affectionate cat e e cummings.
