The Woodshed

(1962)
A novel by

Heppenstall, Rayner. The Woodshed. First Edition. London, Barrie and Rockliff, 1962. 19cm x 12.7cm. pages. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket in protective Mylar. Small stain to top edge, otherwise in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. A man on holiday in Wales receives late one night a message which seems to indicate that his father is dying. Next day, Harold Atha returns to a small house in the industrial West Riding. It is a journey both in place and in time. Mr. Heppenstall does not waste words. The close-woven fabric of his novel glitters with the scenes, characters and incidents of Atha's early years, some humorous, some grim, but all (though in essence common to most men) endued with a unique flavour of intellectual excitement. The atmosphere of Hinderholme, upon which Atha's memories are centred, and of a smaller town in the North Riding is magically conveyed.
