"The Man Who Wore the Star" is the story of John Wescott, town marshal of Catron, who must decide whether he should give up his son to his ex-wife. "A Gift for the General" is the story of John Mosby of the 43rd Battalion of the Confederate Rangers. "A Place for Danny Thorpe" dates from 1967 and concerns a young jockey who is driven out of San Francisco because he refuses to throw a race. Ray Hogan was born in Willow Springs, Missouri. At five the Hogan family moved to Albuquerque. It was while listening to his father and other old-timers tell tales from the past that Ray was inspired to recast these tales in fiction.
