Sixty years ago in October 1942, the prototype German V2 rocket - the world's first practical liquid-fuel rocket - was launched from a secret base on a Baltic island. Just over two months later, on Christmas Eve, a second prototype, the V1 (or Doodlebug), the first pilotless, weapon-carrying aircraft, was also fired from the same site.
