Having completed her training at Miss Nightingale's school for nurses, Camilla Haddesley sets out for Bloomsbury Square to work for 'The Association' as a district nurse. St. Giles and its people become an important part of her life; so, too, do the tall, dark-haired Doctor James Grantly and the wealthy friend of her family, Alexander Buchanan. Camilla comes to a realization of true love, but then cholera strikes St. Giles and she makes a discovery that shocks her.
