Children's Literature
Sarah and Jan earn $40.00 for finding a neighborhood puppy and want to make the most of their money. Hearing about the Grade 4 party to a local water park, the girls decide to spend their money on a class party, too. They soon discover that their $40.00 will not provide much more than punch and cookies, a disappointing realization when measured against their grand plans. However, a good book saves the day. Basing their ideas on a literary connection made during a classroom read-aloud and their social studies unit, the girls decide to spend their earnings on a party to celebrate the diverse nature of their classroom. As well as making all of the plans, Sarah and Jan have to get their teacher's consent and face a daunting visit to their new and somewhat intimidating principal. Their perseverance is remarkable and reflected by the success of their party. Part of "The First Novels. The First Series," the large print, humorous illustrations, simple story line and glossy format will make this book an attractive, quick read for young students. 2001, Formac Publishing, $3.99. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Pamela Jewett
