Rebecca split up wth Patrick, the love of her life, over five months ago. He's moved to New York, but she still keeps mistaking other men for him on the street, in restaurants; on the bus, everywhere; as if he were a ghost. However hard she tries, she just can't get over him. When her best friend Davey discovers that Rebecca has kept her flat like a shrine to Patrick, he realises she needs real help. Davey is a recovering alcoholic, and decides to take Rebecca along to an AA meeting, to see if she can pick up some tips and learn to deal with her addiction to Patrick. After all, Davey points out - addiction is addiction, whatever the specifics. Davey introduces Rebecca to Jake, his mentor at AA, and Jake offers to help Rebecca get over her obsession. But life - and love - are never as simple as a twelve-step program, as Rebecca is about to find out.
