All Maile Spencer wants to do is to take a quick trip to the mainland, attend a funeral, and log some running mileage.

It turns out that April Fool's Day isn't such a great day to hold a funeral!

When Maile reluctantly attends a friend's funeral in Seattle, she discovers there was more to him than she ever realized. In fact, his entire family seems to be hiding a few secrets. But she's learned her lesson about sticking her nose in places it doesn't belong and ignores a few suspicious facts. It isn't until the police get involved that she's drawn into a criminal investigation that becomes far more complicated than anyone could've guessed.

Maile's visit to Seattle takes a turn for the worse when she suffers a knock to the head, hard enough to jolt her into amnesia. After that, nothing makes sense, except one kindly man that seems to understand her trouble. Taking his advice, she flees the hospital--and the police--in a race to save her life. She quickly discovers it wasn't such a good idea, a Hawaiian woman looking for warmth in the cold of a strange land.

Maile makes a few enemies, along with a special new friend, in Fool's Gold, a story of self-reliance and determination that spans the ages!
