In the first novel, Herriot recalls his development from raw young recruit to confident veterinary surgeon in a rural practice in the 1930s. His descriptions of eccentric owners and their animals are vivid and often hilarious. In the second novel, Herriot tries to come to grips with a bewildering array of animal ailments without losing his sense of humour, nor his enthusiasm and love for both his patients and his work.
