![]() | The Mammoth Book of the Science Fiction Century II (2004) (A book in the The Mammoth Book of ... series) An anthology of stories edited by David G Hartwell |
The 20th century was the science fiction century, nowhere more apparent than in David Hartwell's classic anthology of science fiction, first published as The Science Fiction Century. Here in the second and final volume of the collection, he showcases twenty-three stories that prove the sheer range of the genre. From founding fathers of the field like H G Wells and, C S Lewis, and beloved mainstays of the genre such as Philip José Farmer, Roger Zelazny and Jack Vance, to notable female writers including Nancy Kress, and writers who have hit their stride in the last two decades like William Gibson and James Morrow, all manner of SF luminaries are included. Also featured are writers better known beyond the genre such as E M Forster and Michael Shaara, and translations of key foreign writers such as Wolfgang Jeschke and Dino Buzzati. The stories range from the tale of two young lovers who reject the technological future for pastoral bliss, and learn better, to an account of the head-spinning 2006 US Presidential Election, plus the seminal story of a future world dominated by computer technology that brought the word 'cyberspace' to the English language.
