A Cameo Role

(1996)
A novel by

Sally is a thirty-something actress (mostly resting), contented in her flat and with her careful relationships. Then two events begin to tip the balance of her life. She gets a part on television, and a new man moves in downstairs. The Firm, a serial set in a West Midlands stationery company, is badly written, and Sally's is the smallest of all conceivable parts. The new neighbour, Dan, is a builder and would-be teacher in the throes of a bad marriage break-up. Sally failed with her own family and has always preferred keeping a cautious arm's length between herself and the neighbours. Sally is not sure she's ready to turn from being a bystander into a full-blooded participant in life....
