Behind the Beat

Behind the Beat is a collection of true stories from policing Brighton in the noughties, from the author of The Follow and Closer Than Blood. It covers Paul's time on the beat, (occasionally on a mountain bike), his time on the Local Support Team breaking down doors, chasing handbag thieves and causing mayhem for drug dealers, and the Intelligence Unit, where he learned what hard work really was trying to manage vehicle crime and drug operations. Many of the stories helped provide inspiration for his novels, and this book gives a true, sometimes poignant and occasionally hilarious look at the reality of policing the streets of what was the UK's drug death capital.
